So, a woolly mammoth, a saber-toothed tiger, and a sloth walk into a bar… Sorry, couldn’t resist. Anyway, this third Ice Age movie finds our heroes – Manny, Diego, and Sid – visiting a new world full of dinosaurs and strange plants that fight back. And when Sid gets in trouble, his long-suffering friends Diego and Manny have to rescue him.

Besides boasting the most star-studded cast of the summer season (maybe of the entire year), Public Enemies has Michael Mann at the helm. Mann, Christian Bale, Johnny Depp…seriously, what more could you ask of a dramatic retelling of the exploits of gangster John Dillinger, a charismatic bank robber who had the support of the American public?

Movie title: ‘Bruno’

Release Date: July 10, 2009
He’s back…and he’s even more outrageous than he was in Borat. That’s right, Sacha Baron Cohen returns to the big screen as gay fashionista Bruno. It’s likely Bruno will have the same affect on audiences as Borat did, offending some and sending others into hysterics.

Movie title: ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’

Release Date: July 17, 2009
Official website: http://www.harrypotter.com/
Warner Bros Pictures made muggles across the globe mad when they opted to delay the release of the sixth Harry Potter film from 2008 to 2009. But if the trailers are indicative of what we can expect from this dark tale of kid wizards battling the evil Lord Voldemort, then the wait was worthwhile. As the Harry Potter series draws closer to an end, Voldemort is terrorizing muggles and the wizarding community alike. To complicate matters, love is in the air for the teenagers who are called upon to save Hogwarts.

Movie title: ‘G-Force’

Release Date: July 24, 2009
Official website: http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/gforce/
What if the safety of our world was in the hands…er, paws…of guinea pigs? Try to imagine that scenario, or just check out Disney’s animated comedy adventure G-Force to see guinea pigs take charge of keeping the peace.

Movie title: ‘Funny People’

Release Date: July 31, 2009
Official website: http://www.funnypeoplemovie.com/
Judd Apatow’s back in the director seat for a twisted comedy about a stand-up comedian dealing with impending death. In my exclusive interview with Apatow I asked how he finds the funny in such a serious subject. His response: “I don’t know. I think that the worst moments in life are ripe with the most comedy. The worse it gets, the funnier it gets. So, terminal disease – hello! Funny. It’s a very realistic dramatic movie but it’s funny because it’s about a comedian going through a very difficult near-death experience and so you have to see it to kind of understand how that works.”

Movie title: ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’

Release Date: August 7, 2009
Movie trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKVqPzm134U
Channing Tatum says this one is all about the action – big, over-the-top action. Inspired by the popular toy series, the elite G.I. Joe team (I can’t even type that without laughing) must fight the good fight against an arms dealer named Destro and the mysterious operation known as Cobra.

Movie title: ‘Julie and Julia’

Release Date: August 7, 2009

Movie trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeNl35MWqUs
Meryl Streep and Amy Adams reunite for Julie and Julia, a film much, much lighter in tone than their first movie together (Doubt). Based on the bestseller by Julie Powell, Julie and Julia finds Streep playing one of the best chefs to ever set foot in a kitchen – Julia Child. Amy Adams plays Julie, a fan of Child’s work who decides to follow the chef’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking cookbook by whipping up every recipe on its pages over a one year period.

Movie title: ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’

It’s been a long time coming but The Time Traveler’s Wife is finally heading to theaters this summer. Adapted from Audrey Niffenegger’s book, the story follows a man who is able to travel through time and the woman who is the love of his life.

Movie title: ‘Inglourious Basterds’

Release Date: August 21, 2009

Movie trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sQhTVz5IjQ

Quentin Tarantino has wanted to make this film forever, or at least it seems that way since we’ve been hearing about the possibility of Tarantino directing it for years. Tarantino gathered together an interesting cast, led by Oscar nominee Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), in a story of Jewish-American soldiers who are supposed to spread fear throughout the Third Reich and take down the Nazi leadership. Let’s hope the spelling of the film’s title isn’t the most interesting thing about this Tarantino project.
